The road ran from North Hill down to the old Royal Naval Hospital in Stonehouse, and is notable chiefly for being near Plymouth Railway Station (the largest of six surviving railway stations in the City), which was opened in 1877 as Plymouth North Road Station. After the Second World War the road was affected by the construction of the North Cross Roundabout and the consequent widening of the Alma Road approach as part of the regeneration of Plymouth; a development which saw North Road split into two (now North Road East and North Road West). Of the two sections, North Road East still serves as the access point to Plymouth Railway Station; a one-way system leading traffic around the North Cross Roundabout, down to the station via the North Road East entrance route, and back out onto the Alma Road approach (leading city-bound traffic back across the roundabout).
